#FFFFFF background and no overlays. TikTok Shop requires a square main image, at least 600 x 600 px, on a pure white background with no added text, logos, borders, or watermarks. [5] [6]Most image-size guides flatten seven different systems into one answer. That creates expensive mistakes: an Amazon image that passes a generic export check can still lose search visibility without a compliant MAIN image; an Etsy hero can be cropped into a weak thumbnail; a Google image can be valid today but below the announced 2027 floor. [5] [3] [12]
The cleanest recent example is Google Merchant Center. Google published its 2026 product-data update on April 14, 2026. It began warning on the upcoming 500 x 500 px minimum that day, with enforcement for both primary and additional images scheduled for January 31, 2027. A guide that gives only the older 100 x 100 or 250 x 250 minimum is incomplete. [12]
That is why this guide distinguishes a current minimum from a working recommendation, labels fields that official documentation does not specify, and shows a visible last-verified date for every row. It will be reviewed quarterly. This is more useful than pretending a platform rule exists where the source only offers a recommendation.
The under-discussed cost is aspect-ratio inconsistency across a multi-platform catalog. Call it the Silent Crop Tax: the time and conversion loss caused when one image set is repeatedly auto-cropped, letterboxed, or visually weakened without producing a useful hard error.
Etsy tells sellers that the first image determines the shape of following photos and recommends protective negative space because crops are likely. Pinterest warns that Pins taller than 2:3 can be cut off. Meta says mixed carousel ratios may be automatically adjusted and recommends a common 1:1 or 4:5 ratio for consistency. [3] [10] [8]
Those are presentation rules, not always explicit rejection messages. The practical implication is simple: a 3,000 px portrait image is not automatically a good product image if the necklace, clasp, or product edge disappears in the square thumbnail. Resolution protects detail. Ratio protects composition. You need both.

How to read this table: A minimum is the lowest documented threshold or current enforcement floor. It is not a production target. A recommended size is the practical export target that gives a platform room to create zoom, thumbnails, retina displays, and crops without interpolation. Shoot and retain a larger master where practical, then export to the recommended ratio and format for each destination. When a cell says “not specified,” do not invent a rule. Use the platform's published general image-quality guidance and test the live listing preview instead.
Alt text and image-attribute limits: Shopify media allows up to 512 characters and recommends 125 or fewer. Etsy allows up to 250 characters per image description. Meta's separate Instagram image-post API allows 1,000 characters, but Commerce Manager catalog images do not publish a catalog alt-text field. Pinterest catalog alt_text must match the count of main images but has no published character maximum. Official product-image alt-text limits were not found for Amazon, TikTok Shop, or Google Merchant Center. [2] [3] [8] [9]

Shopify is permissive compared with marketplaces. It accepts a broad image set, including WebP, and says square product images usually display best at 2,048 x 2,048 px. The hard limits are under 20 MB and no more than 5,000 x 5,000 px or 25 MP. Shopify does not publish a mandatory product-photo background or a merchant product-upload ban on logos and overlay text in the reviewed help pages. [1]
The gotcha is variant behavior. You can assign only one image directly to a variant, and variants cannot use a video or 3D model. Put supporting close-ups in the gallery and keep related images adjacent, rather than assuming every color or size gets a mini-gallery. [1]
One practical tip: keep your Shopify master image clean even though the platform permits more flexibility. That same master may need to become an Amazon or TikTok cover later. For more hands-on setup guidance, Branvas Academy is a useful starting point for new founders.
Etsy's most important image rule is about truthfulness and crop control, not a white backdrop. It recommends listing photos at least 2,000 px wide and high, while its first-image threshold of 635 px by 635 px is tied to avoiding lower search placement. It also warns that it compresses uploads and converts them to sRGB. [3]
A primary personalized listing image has to show a finished customized item similar to what the buyer receives. A blank tumbler, blank pendant card, or “Your Text Here” mockup cannot carry the first slot, even though additional images may show permitted customization mockups. [4]
In our experience at Branvas, the more common early jewelry-listing error is not 72-DPI metadata. Web storefronts render from pixel dimensions, not the file's DPI label. The real problem is a heavily compressed 2,000 x 2,000 image with the pendant too small in the frame. We now use a pre-export check that verifies the product fills the intended crop, color is converted to sRGB, and the first image is a real finished product.
For founders selling across handmade and retail channels, Branvas for Ecommerce & Boutique Store Owners explains the operational side of getting an initial collection ready.
Amazon is the strictest photography gate in this guide. For a MAIN image, “white background” means pure white, RGB 255,255,255 or #FFFFFF. The product should fill roughly 85% of the frame, be fully visible, and appear as the product and included accessories buyers will receive. [5]
The usual failure is treating an alternate-image rule as a MAIN rule. Alternate images can give scale, show a detail, or show a use case where category rules allow. The MAIN cannot carry overlay claims, review stars, a logo strip, a watermark, a border, a price, or seller information. Without a compliant MAIN, Amazon can temporarily remove a listing from search. [5]
Do not upscale a tiny source file to meet the 1,000-pixel zoom recommendation. Amazon's error guidance can treat a degraded upscaled file as out of focus. Capture or render the larger source first, then export a high-quality JPEG in RGB. [5]
TikTok Shop requires up to nine square images, with one selected as the main image. Every product image must be at least 600 x 600 px. The main image must be an objective physical product view on a pure white background. It cannot contain added logos, text, borders, watermarks, or graphics. [6]
That means a polished lifestyle cover that performs well on Instagram can be the wrong TikTok Shop main image. Use it as a later image if it accurately represents the product, then reserve the first slot for a clean product-first asset. Repeated angles are also disallowed, so use detail, back, clasp, scale, packaging, and real-use views with a purpose. [6]
TikTok Shop has the clearest AI-image policy of the seven platforms here. Fully generated or significantly AI-edited content must be disclosed, and it cannot misstate size, color, material, bundle contents, features, safety, or performance. [7]
Creators who are turning an audience into a physical collection should look at Branvas for Influencers & Creators before they build a listing workflow around social-first assets.
For Commerce Manager catalog images, use JPEG or PNG, keep files under 8 MB, and submit at least 500 x 500 px. Meta recommends 1,024 x 1,024 px and shows Shop product images as square. A white backdrop is recommended, not mandated. [8]
The silent technical failure here is often the URL, not the pixels. Meta can fail to fetch a valid image because of password protection, firewall rules that block its user agent, a preview page instead of a raw file, a redirect, an incorrect content type, or a slow response. Change the image URL when the asset changes, because replacing the file at the same URL may not refresh promptly. [8]
Use the same ratio across carousel images, ideally 1:1 or 4:5, to avoid automatic adjustment. Do not confuse the 1,000-character alt_text setting for an Instagram API image post with a catalog-image field. Meta's catalog specification does not publish a catalog alt-text limit. [8]
Pinterest needs two answers, depending on what you are publishing. For a standard static Pin, 1,000 x 1,500 px at 2:3 is the recommended format. Pinterest says taller Pins can be cut off in feeds. Its standard image limit is 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in-app. [10]
For retail-catalog Product Pins, the main image_link has a separate documented minimum of 1,000 x 1,500 px. Additional catalog image links can be as small as 75 x 75 px, but that is a feed minimum, not a merchandising recommendation. Pinterest also requires catalog images to be accessible to its user agent and not be placeholders or templates. [9]
One seller mistake is updating an image without changing its URL. Pinterest tells merchants to use a new link when an image changes. It also creates a new Pin for every additional image link. Treat URL versioning as part of your asset workflow. [9]
Google Shopping separates the product's clean primary image from its supporting images. The primary image_link must show the complete actual product without staging. Product-in-use shots, close-ups, bundle parts, graphics, and illustrations belong in additional_image_link images. [11]
The current enforcement floor remains 100 x 100 px for non-clothing and 250 x 250 px for apparel as of this guide's verification date. But merchants should work to 500 x 500 px or higher now because Google's 2026 update moves both primary and additional images to a 500 x 500 px minimum on January 31, 2027. Google's performance recommendation is around 1,500 x 1,500 px or above when possible. [11] [12]
Google accepts WebP alongside JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF. That does not make WebP a universal listing format. TikTok Shop and Meta's catalog spec list JPG/JPEG/PNG, and Pinterest's standard static Pin spec lists PNG/JPEG. Keep the WebP export for surfaces that accept it, but retain a high-quality JPEG or PNG master export for the rest. [6] [8] [10] [11]

The Branvas Image-Ready Framework™ is a five-step, pre-listing routine for making a new product catalog portable across channels. It is designed to prevent rework before the first listing goes live.
List every channel you plan to use, then identify the strictest requirement that controls the hero asset. For a physical jewelry product going to Amazon and TikTok Shop, that usually means a square, pure-white, product-only main image with no overlay text. Use that as the baseline shoot, not as the only image in the set.
Photograph the master at 1:1 or wider with room around the object. Do not start with a tight portrait crop and force it into square later. Keep the product centered in the safe area, then create intentional crops for Pinterest's 2:3 storytelling frame and any 4:5 social carousel.
Keep three controlled exports for each approved image:
The master file is not the listing file. The matrix is what lets a team change one platform export without damaging the original.
Preview every candidate image in each platform's native thumbnail or catalog context. Check the square thumbnail, mobile card, carousel, and Pin feed. Flag clipped edges, tiny products, inconsistent background borders, and images where the product's center changes from one platform to another.
Treat platform requirements as versioned operations data. Put the page URL, specification decision, and review date in a shared sheet. A simple log works:
| Platform | Asset type | Spec decision | Official source | Last verified | Next review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | MAIN | 2,048 x 2,048 JPG, #FFFFFF, no overlay |
Product image guide | 2026-09-30 | 2026-12-31 |

A founder is launching a gold pendant necklace in four channels. The team photographs the necklace on a pure white seamless background at 3,000 x 3,000 px in sRGB, leaving about 8% of empty margin around the pendant and chain.
Step 1: Amazon MAIN and TikTok Shop set the strict baseline: a clean, square, physical product image with no text or added logo. The team keeps the white background at RGB 255,255,255. The necklace, chain, and included pendant are fully visible.
Step 2: The 3,000 x 3,000 master remains uncropped as the source. The team makes one 2,048 x 2,048 crop where the pendant occupies most of the frame without clipping the chain. A separate Etsy crop keeps extra negative space for thumbnail resilience.
Step 3: The export matrix is:
gold-pendant-necklace-main-amazon.jpg, 2,048 x 2,048 px, RGB JPEG, white background, under 10 MB.gold-pendant-necklace-main-tiktok.jpg, 1,200 x 1,200 px, RGB JPEG, white background, under 10 MB.gold-pendant-necklace-shopify.webp, 2,048 x 2,048 px, optimized WebP, plus a matching JPG fallback/master.gold-pendant-necklace-etsy-primary.jpg, 2,000 x 2,000 px, JPG, product centered with safe crop space.gold-pendant-necklace-detail-etsy.jpg, 2,000 x 2,000 px, clasp and texture detail.Step 4: The team previews the Amazon and TikTok square cards, Shopify variant preview, and Etsy thumbnail. The first crop cuts the bottom of the chain in a small square preview, so the team returns to the master and adds 70 px of breathing room before export. That is a Silent Crop Tax catch before launch, not after a weak click-through rate.
Step 5: Shopify media alt text is set to: “Gold pendant necklace with a round polished pendant and adjustable fine chain on a white background.” It is descriptive, concise, and well below Shopify's 512-character maximum. The log records each platform page and the 2026-09-30 verification date. [2]

A useful template set does not just give you blank artboards. It protects the product and makes the export decision repeatable.
For each hero product, create these artboards in Photoshop or Figma:
| Template | Artboard | What it should contain |
|---|---|---|
| Universal square master | 3,000 x 3,000 px | Center guides, an 85% product-occupancy reference, a safe crop ring, white-background layer, and locked color-profile note. |
| Shopify square | 2,048 x 2,048 px | Product-safe zone, variant thumbnail preview, alt-text and filename field. |
| Amazon MAIN | 2,000 x 2,000 px | Locked #FFFFFF background, 85% frame reference, no-overlay warning, and product-boundary guide. |
| TikTok Shop cover | 1,200 x 1,200 px | Square safe zone, pure-white layer, and visible “no added text/logo/watermark” reminder. |
| Etsy primary | 2,000 x 2,000 px | Square and landscape crop previews, central safe area, and finished-product check. |
| Pinterest static Pin | 1,000 x 1,500 px | 2:3 grid, title-safe zone if used, and a thumbnail crop preview. |
| Meta carousel variant | 1,080 x 1,350 px | 4:5 frame, product-safe zone, and a note to keep the ratio consistent across the set. |
Use a 5% to 10% outer safe zone for products with long chains, straps, handles, or shadows. Keep a separate text-exclusion layer for Amazon and TikTok Shop assets rather than trying to remember which export permits an overlay.
Canva product-photo templates are fast for simple social crops, but they do not know whether your item meets Amazon's MAIN-image rule. Adobe Express is convenient for quick resizing, but still needs a source-quality and background check. Figma Community files can be helpful for grids and crop guides, but validate the file dimensions and export profile yourself. None of these tools replaces the platform preview.
Branvas provides brand-ready product-image and packaging templates as part of its launch-kit workflow. The key is not the design application. It is keeping one approved source, one export matrix, and one verification log.

AI policy is not one universal yes-or-no answer. The safest rule is that the image must still depict the product accurately, and any platform-specific disclosure or metadata requirement has to be followed.
contains-synthetic-performer. This is not a blanket policy for every product-only AI image. [16]is_ai_generated option are separate tools, not a catalog exception. [8]ai_disclosures field for qualifying realistic AI-modified imagery or AI-generated humans that could be confused with a real person or event. There was no blanket Product Pin prohibition in the reviewed source. [9]image_link, additional_image_link, or lifestyle_image_link must retain IPTC DigitalSourceType metadata identifying their AI origin. [13]The gray zone is simple: an AI-generated background that leaves the actual product truthful may still require disclosure or metadata depending on the platform. An AI image that changes the jewelry finish, stone size, number of items, fit, or included components is a catalog-accuracy problem even if it looks good.

Q: What is the best image size for Shopify product pages in 2026?
A: Shopify says square product images usually display best at 2,048 x 2,048 px. That is the practical target for a product-page master, not a mandatory minimum. Keep the image under 20 MB and below 5,000 x 5,000 px or 25 MP. Shopify does not publish a universal product-image background rule, so choose the background based on the channels you also need to serve. If Amazon or TikTok Shop is in the mix, shoot a white-background source first. [1]
Q: Does Amazon require a pure white background for all product images?
A: No. The pure-white RGB 255,255,255 requirement is specifically for the MAIN image. Amazon's reviewed general guidance does not set a universal alternate-image background color, though alternate images still must accurately represent the product and follow category and content rules. Use alternates for detail, scale, use cases, and features, but do not add prohibited overlays, reviews, promotional claims, or watermarks. [5]
Q: What image format should I use for Google Shopping, JPG or WebP?
A: Google Merchant Center accepts both JPEG and WebP, along with PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF. Use the format that preserves accurate product detail while staying below 16 MB and matching the actual file extension. JPEG remains the safest portable export when the same asset also needs TikTok Shop or Meta catalog compatibility. WebP is useful for Google and Shopify, but it is not a universal product-listing format across the seven platforms. [1] [6] [8] [11]
Q: Why do my Etsy listing images look blurry on mobile even though I uploaded a large file?
A: Large pixel dimensions alone do not guarantee a sharp mobile result. Etsy compresses uploads and converts them to sRGB. A source can also look soft because it was already compressed, the product occupies a tiny part of the frame, or the first-image crop removes the visual focal point. Start with a sharp 2,000 px-plus source, export in sRGB, keep the product large enough in the frame, leave crop space, and inspect the live mobile thumbnail. [3]
Q: Can I use the same product image across all ecommerce platforms?
A: You can use the same master photograph, but you should not use one identical upload file everywhere. Amazon MAIN and TikTok Shop cover images have strict white-background and no-overlay rules. Pinterest benefits from a 2:3 vertical creative. Meta and Shopify can use more flexible image sets. Build one approved master, then export platform-specific versions that preserve the product truthfully and use intentional crops. That is faster than repairing rejected or underperforming listings later.
